British Values
At Bapchild and Tonge we believe that British Values are fundamental to the growth and development of our whole school community. They are complemented by our School Values and Virtues.
The Department for education states that there is a need, “To create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs”.
The Department for Education defines British Values as follows:
- Respect for democracy and support or participation in the democratic process
- Respect for the basis on which the law is made and applies in England
- Support for equality of opportunity for all
- Support and respect for the liberties of all within the law
- Respect for and tolerance of different faiths and religious and other beliefs
We promote the British Values through our School Council, Eco-Warriors and Fellowship of Friends. These elected groups of pupils represent their peers, playing an active role in decision making and engaging with issues that affect our school community and the wider world. This includes supporting local, national and international charities through specific fundraising days throughout the year.
Our curriculum promotes the fundamental British Values throughout. Ways in which we do this include specific text choices in English, Topics that raise awareness and encourage enquiry, an RE curriculum that promotes respect and tolerance of different faiths and worldviews, and through discreet PSHE lessons. In addition, we engage in focused curriculum weeks across the year where we explore and engage in learning promoting the British Values. These include Arts Week, Anti-bullying Week, Science Week and World Awareness Week.
