Welcome Back!

Happy New Year!!!

This is a very exciting term for Year 6! In a couple of weeks we will be enjoying one another's company and working together at Little Canada on the Isle of Wight. Our residential links with our Topic this term: Investigating Coasts, as well as with this term's Christian Values focus of 'Compassion'. We will be supporting one another and being thoughtful towards each other as we challenge ourselves, develop independence and have lots of fun!

Our English focus this term is fiction and creative writing. We are exploring the island of 'Myst' on our I-pads to develop our descriptive language. Later in the term we will study Michael Morpurgo's book; Kensuke's Kingdom.

In mathematics we are revising and building on our knowledge of place value, negative numbers, operations, problem solving, fractions, decimals and percentages. We shall be spending time mastering the skills we have.

In RE we are learning about the authority, structure and origins of The Bible and will be reflecting on its impact on our lives.

Our science topic is physics-based, learning about forces and magnetism. We shall spend time planning and investigating through experiments.

For PE we are being taught further skills in gymnastics with our coach in Faversham. In school we will be improving our fitness and strength through circuit training.

In computing we shall be learning about building apps, whilst in art we'll be exploring our creativity through a variety of media. We shall be learning French and music with specialist teachers every Wednesday afternoon.

Autumn is going to be very busy, full of learning and fun!!

Forensic Science at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School

11th July 2016

There has been a crime committed at QE, and we have been sent to solve it with our forensics team!

Using the latest scientific techniques we think we have caught the culprit! We have been rewarded for our efforts with some delicious cakes, produced by the Yr 9 students of QE Grammar School. Thank you to the team at QE for an amazing crime-fighting morning!!

New Class Mates Join Year 5!!

Fisher class were delighted to welcome Miss Appleton into their class on Wednesday (22nd June) along with a whole host of animals from the collection at Highsted. Miss Appleton, a teacher at Highsted Grammar School, brought into school a range of vertebrates and invertebrates to show the children. They discussed the adaptations, if they were prey or predators and built a food web with real life examples. They discussed and considered the implications if one of the organisms was removed from the food web and the devastating impact that this can have on the rest of the habitat. The children demonstrated care, kindness and compassion to the animals as they handled the organisms. A huge thank you to Highsted and Miss Appleton.

Faversham Gym

This term and week, Year 5 have been attending Faversham Gym to take part and receive expert gymnastics coaching. It is great to see the children responding so well to the learning points. They have had the opportunity to use a range of equipment including the floor trampolines, bars and vaults.

Riverside Country Park

On Thursday 26th May, 2016 Year 5's boarded the coach and headed for Riverside Country Park, Rainham where they took part in a range of activities linked to their Science topic of Habitats. Guided by Belinda, the Ranger, the children took part in Pond Dipping, Orienteering and Mini-beast hunting and identifying in a meadow and orchard. They had a great day learning lots about the diverse habitats found around Riverside.

Year 5 have had a very busy term 5. We have been going to Golf lessons on Friday afternoons at Sittingbourne Golf Centre. This has been great as we have used the range to drive the ball, pitching onto the green and putting. Thank you to Leon Stanford for coaching us and a massive THANK YOU to the parents who dropped us off and picked us up! Thank you!

This week (week beginning 7th March) year 5 have been measuring different objects using imperial and metric units. On Tuesday, the children enjoyed making different magic potions! We used different ingredients and had to measure accuratley using pints, ml, and l. We moved on to measuring mass on Wednesday, and for this we made cupcakes. The children worked in groups to weigh the ingredients and bake their cakes. They were delicious!

Move and Learn

Last week was the last session of the brilliant ‘Move and Learn’ programme for Year 5. The scheme which is run by Charlton Athletic FC had Bob Boulder (ex -Liverpool, Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton Athletic Football Club Goalkeeper) leading a fun and informative healthy lifestyles programme. The children have enjoyed class sessions learning about the body, exercise and received outdoor coaching sessions in Football, Dodgeball and Handball.

Year 5 Class Assembly

As a follow-up to the Year 5 trip to the Globe Theatre and the work they have been doing on Macbeth, the children performed their Class Assembly to the friends and families on Friday  27th November. With a retelling of Macbeth, quiz and recount of the trip the children did themselves proud! William also received his confirmation gifts and certificate from Rev George and Rev Lesley.

Macbeth

Year 5 had a fantastic visit to London on Friday 20th November, 2015 to the Globe Theatre. The class have been studying Macbeth and so took a trip to Shakespeare's Theatre to soak up the atmosphere and experience the open air theatre. After a tour of the Globe they took part in a workshop which honed and developed their acting skill. A huge thank you to all the adults who gave up their time to make the trip happen!

Move and Learn

Year 5 have been working with Bob Boulder ex Liverpool, Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton Athletic Football Club Goalkeeper who has been leading a 'Move and Learn' programme. The children have enjoyed class sessions learning about the body and healthy lifestyles and outdoor coaching sessions in Football, Dodgeball and Handball. As you can see from the photos they have thoroughly enjoyed their time!

Year 5 Horton Kirby Environmental Centre Visit

At the end of out first full week we set off to Horton Kirby Environmental Centre for a 'River Study Day'. This term our topic is 'Rivers' so we thought a field trip was a great way to start our topic!

Equipped with their own discovery bags, the children completed a five minute walk to the river, looking at physical features on the way. After gauging the flow of the river with a quick game of pooh sticks, the children studied photos of the immediate environment in order to ascertain how the physical and human features have changed over time. The children then entered the river at two sites; each time measuring the flow and depth, and using their observations to explain why these measurements change throughout the year. Check out the photo below to see what we got up to.

Welcome to Year 4!

We have had a wonderful first term with Becket Class.  We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the children and would like to share some photographs from this term's work.

Hello! We are year 4. We are named after Thomas Becket so we are known as Becket class. Our teachers are Mrs Hoult, Mrs Green and Mrs Willis. We are a kind and caring class and we like to have fun while we learn.

On Thursday 12th February Year 4 engaged in an epic re-enactment of the Battle of Bosworth Field 1485.  Year 4 played the role of the House of York and King Richard's army.  They played this role valiantly!  Photos can be seen on the Year 3 Class page.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the children and the parents / carers of Year 4, for their hard work and support this year.  I wish you all the best for the future and am sure that Mrs Hoult and Mrs Green will have as much fun as I have.

In Physical Education this term and throughout Term 4, Year 4 pupils will benefit from a special Field Hockey coach visiting the school on Tuesday afternoons.  Parents and carers are reminded that children need to be equipped with appropriate outdoor PE clothing to help keep them warm.

This term we have been studying 'The Dragon Charmer' by Douglas Hill in English.  It is a story about a girl who has an amazing adventure, overcoming her fears to save the Dragon Prince.

We have also been studying Tudor history and culture in Topic.
