Year 2

Welcome to our Year 2 page!

Year 1 page

We enjoyed our Sports Day this morning. Everyone tried they’re best and supported their team mates. Bristol had quite a monopoly in the running races but it was York who triumphed overall, despite being plagued by the flies that always particularly like their yellow t-shirts!
We had a great day in Rochester. We did an I-Spy trail in the Cathedral and learned about Baptism. We had our lunch by the castle and then did some observational drawings.

Art Week!

We have had a very busy Art Week and have produced lots of work and tried lots of new techniques. The week took inspiration from a famous painting from the National Gallery called "Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump" by Joseph Wright of Derby. Here we are making a "Freeze Frame" of the picture.

Picture 1
Picture 2
Picture 3
We noticed the moon in the painting and made our own pictures of moons and planets using stencils and chalk, carefully blending to make them look spherical. We also learned about the phases of the moon.

We also thought about air because of the air pump in the picture. We saw a bottle with a straw and decided to make paintings with straws.

Picture 7
In the painting is a jar with an object floating in it. Nobody is quite sure what it is. We had lots of different ideas such as a dead mole, a dinosaur bone and a lump of mud. When we looked at our blow paintings we could also see lots of different things and so we added lines and eyes to the shapes to show what we could see.

We were also interested in the shadows that the candle in the middle made all around. We explored the idea of shadows by making silhouette portraits.

We made shadow pictures using cellophane and sugar paper inside laminating pouches. We could shine a light through them and project the shapes onto the ceiling.

Infant Sports Day Monday 19th June 2017

We had the most wonderful time at Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park. In the morning we worked with Lyndsey to catch and identify mini beasts in the grass and under logs and also in the pond. We had a great picnic in the shade and then did some more exploring and playing.

Thank you for dropping us off and collecting us to make this trip possible.

Our Maths work has been on Data Handling this week. The first 3 pictures are Carroll Diagrams which we used to sort shapes by 2 properties. We sorted colour red/ not red and shape rectangles/ not rectangles at the same time into the 4 sections using the big board. We also collected data by counting vehicles and finding 'treasure' on the Big Field. We then made a tick chart and counted to find out how many of each vehicle. We also do this every Tuesday to find out how many people walked, drive and stride, biked or came by car. We then made 2 pictograms by sticking on our 'treasures' (the orange pictogram) and the vehicles we saw (the green pictogram).

Great to see the children learning and using so many Maths skills through everyday, practical experiences.

Our RE lesson this week was based on the Bible story of 'The loaves and fishes'. We reflected on the Values in the story especially Trust by drawing a picture of someone that we trust. We also made bread to illustrate the Value of Friendship through sharing. We shared mixing the dough as a team but then had our own piece to knead. After kneading we shared a baking tray so together our individual pieces made one flower ready for baking.

Helicopter Stories

Today we have started our class book of Helicopter stories. This is a special book where the children are the authors. The children tell a story aloud and an adult writes it in the story book for them. We then sit around our new stage and children act out the story by being the characters and dramatising the action. Max's story had the character Mario and Alisa's had a princess, a nice dragon and a knight. The class story had a gingerbread man, a fox, a brown bear and a tiger.

These stories are great for improving the children's use and understanding of language, imaginations, love of stories and confidence.

Just in case you are wondering, we believe they are called Helicopter Stories because the first ever story of this type featured a helicopter!
